Immigrants Accompaniment Training

Immigrants Accompaniment Training

Accompany immigrants who have already been identified by ICE for possible deportation and have to appear in immigration court or to check in with ICE.

The Immigration Accompaniment Program helps support families who are going through the immigration process in 3 ways:

  • PROVIDES A SUPPORT STRUCTURE to strengthen those caught in immigration proceedings

  • KEEPS FAMILY MEMBERS INFORMED at every step of the process as their loved ones move forward

  • HOLDS LEGAL OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE for providing accurate information and serving due process

It is a concrete way to extend sanctuary for the most vulnerable among us. Sanctuary is not a physical entity but the spaces wherein all of us can breathe freely and in dignity.

We are building a movement that cares and protects the other, not matter where they are from or who they are. We are opening sanctuary spaces on every block where people can feel safe and welcome.

The CBE Refugee Task Force will be hosting a New Sanctuary Coalition accompaniment training.  The New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) accompaniment program recruits and trains volunteers to accompany people facing deportation to their immigration hearings and ICE check-ins. This provides moral support to the person facing deportation and enables volunteers to hold immigration authorities accountable. Standing in solidarity with migrants facing deportation also demonstrates to immigration judges, ICE officers, and government attorneys that there is a community mobilized against their deportation. NSC accompanies hundreds of people a year.

How does it work?  Once you're trained you become part of the accompaniment program. You'll learn about upcoming accompaniments and can sign up for time slots and locations that work for you.

NATIONAL REFUGEE SHABBAT

We will come together as a community to eat a delicious dinner with our refugee friends. Come hear from HIAS representative Melanie Nezer, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs on the current state of the refugee program, enjoy a live musical performance by musicians Dijwar Karaman and Sherwan Kanj, and celebrate CBE's accomplishments working to reunite families and help refugees and asylum seekers.

SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

Melanie Nezer, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs

Melanie Nezer leads HIAS’ efforts to inform and educate individuals, institutions, elected officials and communities about refugees and to galvanize them to take action. As Senior Vice President for Public Affairs, she oversees the Communications, Community Engagement, Development and Policy and Advocacy teams.

A longtime refugee rights advocate, Melanie has shaped much of HIAS’ policy and advocacy agenda and its legal work in her time at the agency. She previously served as HIAS’ Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, as Migration Policy Counsel, and as Director of HIAS’ Employment Visa Program, representing at-risk Jewish professionals and religious workers seeking to work in the U.S. during times of instability and crisis in their home countries.

Before joining HIAS, Melanie was the Immigration Policy Director for the organization now known as US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), where—in addition to conducting advocacy on immigration and asylum issues—she was co-editor of Refugee Reports and a writer for the annual World Refugee Survey.

Prior to her work in Washington, Melanie was in private practice in Miami, Florida, where she specialized in immigration law and criminal defense.
