HIAS Briefing Call: The National Emergency

The President declared a national emergency in order to redirect nearly $8 billion to build a wall at the southern border. The humanitarian crisis at the border is a result of the Administration’s own policies, which have put the safety and rights of people seeking asylum at risk. There is no emergency at the southern border. Join HIAS for an up-to-the-minute briefing call.

MetroCards for Refugees Drive

  • Congregation Beth Elohim (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The task force is collecting MetroCards for HIAS clients and RDJ Refugee Shelter residents. MetroCards are a major expense for refugees, asylum seekers and asylees as they try to get around the city for appointments.

MetroCards can be dropped off at CBE (274 Garfield Pl.)—we will have a box at the security desk set out for this purpose, starting 1/15/19. Please indicate the amount on the card (you can put it in an envelope with the amount written on the outside or attach a note securely with a paperclip). Any denomination will be accepted, but cards with enough money to cover 10 rides are the most sought after. If you have a commuter benefit card (like TransitChek or WageWorks) with extra money on it, this is a good way to use it up!

Alternately, you can also donate to our Go Fund Me and we will purchase the cards and deliver them to HIAS and RDJ: https://www.gofundme.com/metrocards-for-refugees

Immigrants Accompaniment Training

Immigrants Accompaniment Training

Accompany immigrants who have already been identified by ICE for possible deportation and have to appear in immigration court or to check in with ICE.

The Immigration Accompaniment Program helps support families who are going through the immigration process in 3 ways:

  • PROVIDES A SUPPORT STRUCTURE to strengthen those caught in immigration proceedings

  • KEEPS FAMILY MEMBERS INFORMED at every step of the process as their loved ones move forward

  • HOLDS LEGAL OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE for providing accurate information and serving due process

It is a concrete way to extend sanctuary for the most vulnerable among us. Sanctuary is not a physical entity but the spaces wherein all of us can breathe freely and in dignity.

We are building a movement that cares and protects the other, not matter where they are from or who they are. We are opening sanctuary spaces on every block where people can feel safe and welcome.

The CBE Refugee Task Force will be hosting a New Sanctuary Coalition accompaniment training.  The New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) accompaniment program recruits and trains volunteers to accompany people facing deportation to their immigration hearings and ICE check-ins. This provides moral support to the person facing deportation and enables volunteers to hold immigration authorities accountable. Standing in solidarity with migrants facing deportation also demonstrates to immigration judges, ICE officers, and government attorneys that there is a community mobilized against their deportation. NSC accompanies hundreds of people a year.

How does it work?  Once you're trained you become part of the accompaniment program. You'll learn about upcoming accompaniments and can sign up for time slots and locations that work for you.
